A show I could become addicted to...

Do you watch Gossip Girl?

Gosh, I want to. I wish I'd hopped on the bandwagon when it first started because now I'm a gagillion episodes behind. I got the first two disks of the first season from Netflix this summer, and I was hooked. Just the set shots alone are enough to make you want to watch it. And Blair's headband collection? Um, swoon.

I'm thinking I want to rent the first two or three seasons on DVD to watch this weekend after my surgery.

Happy Wednesday! Only 17 days 'till Christmas!

A Preppy Conversion

Those of you who know my brother know that he resists a "preppy" way of life. Or so I thought. Apparently he asked my parents for a pair of Topsiders for Christmas! Boy, was I excited. He has such an All-American look; it would be effortless for him to look the preppy part if he would ditch the ratty t-shirts in favor of a polo or two. And I must say, over the years, he has conformed to my wishes rather well. For example, my mom and I bought him his first pair of plaid shorts last year about this time, and much to our surprise, they got a lot of use this spring and summer.

Anyway, after much debate, we finally picked out these Sperry Originals for him to unwrap on Christmas morning:

I'll definitely post pictures once he gets them on. I'm so excited; we'll match! And Dad too! I love giving Christmas presents.

Have a great Tuesday; don't forget to watch Glee tonight!

I miss summer!

With the first snow Saturday night, I thought it only appropriate to reminisce about summer... This summer was probably one of the busiest, but most rewarding summers of my life. I lifeguarded, babysat A TON, went on a mission trip and several vacations, as well as completed an online class. I also went to church camp for the fourth summer in a row, but didn't get many pictures. Even though it was busy, it was a blast. Here are some highlights!

BB and I on our family vacation to Hungry Mother State Park in June.

LB, BB and Dad trying to figure out exactly where we were supposed to go on our hike.

I love this picture! I took it in a classroom in Philadelphia, where I went on my mission trip in July. My friend Kelso and I were helping to teach the kids about bike safety.

This picture definitely embodies that trip for me; I was truly humbled by my experiences helping the under-privileged and homeless in Philly.
This was such a great day... It was one of our last days in Philadelphia, and we were all given $1 with which to buy lunch after we'd given our packed lunches away to homeless people. We were essentially homeless for the afternoon and met some people who, as cheesy as it sounds, changed our lives.

On our last day in PA, we went to see Independence Hall.

This was a girl's beach weekend in August. These are my two best friends, Na (center) and AlPal (right). They came on our family beach trip last year, but this summer I had to miss it because I was in Philly. We made a quick trip to the beach for the weekend, just to keep with the tradition. I was SO sick, but managed to have a good time anyway. I'm definitely glad I stuck it out.
This summer, I'm hoping to be healthy enough to go to running camp with my XC team in late July, or I may decide to go to the beach with my mom's entire family (all seventeen of us). Depending on what happens, I may go to another running camp the next week with BB's team, but we'll have to wait and see how the hip does (and what I decide about the beach). On that note, I'm also hoping to be able to do some sort of field hockey camp (I really want to go to the one at UNC, but I don't know if I'll be experienced enough), along with lifeguarding again and hopefully making time for my two favorite little boys, HB and WB, who I've babysat for almost a year now. Our household and my dad's family will be going back to our cabins on the hill at Hungry Mother State Park in June, and I'm very sad that the dates for mission trips and church camps didn't work out for 2011.

However, summer is a grand total of six months away, so I'm trying not to get too excited because a lot can change in six months. Does anyone else already have their summer planned?

Happy Monday!

Another Friday Five a little late...

Today's Friday (well, actually Saturday) Five is the five books I think everyone should read!

1.) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen-- definitely a classic and one of my all-time favorite love stories!

2.) Emma also by Jane Austen-- a little bit confusing (I'd almost reccomend reading a plot summary before starting... Is that bad of me?), but still a great read. There's just something about the classics.
3.) Little Women by Louisa May Alcott-- I read this last summer on our family's drive cross-country. There's a reason it's considered a classic. Wonderful story. (It does get a little slow at some points, but it's still very good).

4.) The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd-- I had to read this as a summer reading book a couple years ago and LOVED it. So good. And the movie's awesome too!

5.) The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett-- I read it in like, 2nd grade, and didn't get a lot out of it, as you can imagine. When I re-read it freshman year, I fell in love. It's just such a good story!

Like I said, there's just something about the classics. Wishes for a fantastic Saturday; I'm going to be decorating the house for Christmas!!

Mama called the doctor and the doctor said...

no more running for Bee! Sad face.

As I've mentioned before, I've had a couple of set-backs when it comes to XC. This summer, about four days before school started, I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my hip. I was on crutches for almost six weeks, then cleared to cross-train, and cleared to run about six weeks ago. Along with the stress fracture, however, there was an insignificant tear in the labrum (the ring of cartilage the surrounds the hip joint), but the doctor thought that with rest it could possibly go away. He told me to run on it for a couple weeks and see how it felt, and if it was still bothering me to call him. Well, I called him last week and told him that I was still having some pain with running, and even though it wasn't excruciating, I wanted to come in and see him again. He referred me to another doctor at his same practice and we went in and met with him yesterday morning.

Let me just say that this guy's credentials are AMAZING. He got his Bachelor's in Science from UVA, did a stint in the U.S. Army, and then went to Medical School. After recieving his Medical Degree from the "College of Physicians and Surgeons" at Columbia University, he went on to do his residency at Harvard. Wow, right?

Anyway, the guy told me that there was really no way that this thing was going to go away on its own. So, I'm going to have to go under the knife. It's an arthoscopic operation, which means they only make a few tiny incisions with which to insert their instruments... I'm more worried about the anesthesia/IV. I'm not very good with needles.

Worst case scenario, I'm on crutches for four weeks (only two of them at school, though), with three months of "recovery", which basically means cross-training (biking, swimming, and elliptical). So, in the grand scheme of things, not that bad. However, I will have to be on crutches during Christmas, which would completely, totally and utterly stink.

BUT if they get in there and find that the labrum is damaged beyond repair (this is common in about 95% of patients), then they just remove the entire piece of cartilage and I can bear weight the next day. I'm sure you can guess which one I'd prefer.

The only reason that they aren't just going to remove the whole thing from the get-go is because the procedure is only about 10 years old, no one's really sure what the effects of removing the labrum are. Some surgeons believe that it could lead to higher risk of arthritis and the chance of a hip replacement later on. Needless to say, they want to try to keep me anatomically correct for as long as possible.

I'm pretty bummed, but trying to keep a positive attitude. At least I still have both my legs, you know? I have so much to be thankful for, and I'm trying to see past the inconvenience of the situation and look forward to next XC season when I can race. The glass is half full! (At least that's what I keep telling myself).

Happy Friday!

P.S. I'm wearing my new skirt today!
P.P.S. Because of this "breaking news" I had to postpone my Friday Five post. Look for it tomorrow!

Thank you, Kathy!!

I arrived home from practice yesterday afternoon to find a yellow Forever 21 package on my kitchen table. I was kind of scared at first, as I hadn't ordered anything from them, and my thoughts immediately jumped to the article I read yesterday morning about identity theft.

Never fear, though, as soon as I ripped into the parcel, I was delighted to find a Love 21 Windowpane Sheen Skirt inside. Considering the not-so-great day I had, this was just the thing to restore the smile to my face. YOU'RE THE BEST, KATHY! I'm planning to wear it tomorrow for a project presentation and I can't wait to show it off to all my friends.

It's so pretty! I'm the luckiest girl in the world.
On another note, though, I have some exciting news:
My friend Chan-Chan, who is a headband conessoir, has agreed to let me write about her and her FABULOUS collection. It should be ready for press sometime in the next week or so, so definitely keep an eye out for that.

Tommorow's Friday!

Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit!

Happy December!!

When I was in 6th grade, my history teacher, who was a bit of a freak to begin with, wore head-to-toe sparkles on December 1st. Actually, that's a lie. She wore sequin leggings with a Christmas sweater. No joke. And sparkly shoes with a sequin headband with a bow. I kid you not.
In honor of Ms. Hite, today's post is all about Christmas sparkle... The right way.

My friend Les has a pair of pink sparkly TOMS, and I think they're so cute. I love the gold ones, too, though... Perfect for holiday parties!
These are Kate Spade... Ooh, aah.

These Forever 21 headbands are simple, but still sparkly!
I can't say I'm crazy about the color of this F21 bag, but I love the zig-zag sequins!

These flats from Charlotte Russe would be perfect with an LBD.
This J. Crew glitter belt would look really great with a red skirt and simple white blouse for a holiday party!
J. Crew's sequin skirt would be equally sparkly and festive with a black turtleneck.
Happy Wednesday!
